Congratulations, you are engaged! This is such an exciting time for the two of you. But, as you start to think about planning a wedding, it can seem like a huge task! There are so many details to start thinking about when you get engaged.
I have helped many couples like you navigate this new experience as a wedding planner. Now that you have found the perfect someone, I wanted to share some of my top tips for what to do once engaged!
1. Enjoy The Moment
Before you start the wedding planning journey, make sure you enjoy it! Soak in this incredible time, and enjoy the feeling of being proposed to! As a wedding planner, I know how quickly time can fly once you start planning. So, enjoy the time you get to call your partner your “fiancé!” Flaunt that ring and just be engaged.
2. Share The News With Your Friends And Family First
The last place your family and closest friends should hear about your news is on social media. So make sure to give them a call or a visit to give them the happy news! Your parents might have already known it was about to happen and are waiting patiently for your call. Once you are ready to share it with the world, you can post on social media and share the sweet proposal story. And don’t forget to make it Facebook official!
3. Decide On The Number Of Guests
I suggest creating your guest list before you start looking at venues. Venues will have guest count limitations, so you need to know an estimated number of guests before touring spaces. I also suggest communicating these things with your fiancé before discussing details with everyone else. This is for the two of you – so think about what you want!
To get started, make a list of those you know you want to be there. This way, you have a starting point. If your parent’s input matters, have them do the same.
Wedding planner tip: About 20% of your guest list will decline. This can be due to other commitments, travel restrictions, or family matters. So you can have a slightly larger list and know that some may not be able to attend.
4. Decide On Season/Date
Once you have an estimated guest count, it’s time to start dreaming of when and where your wedding will be! Do you dream of an elopement in a Chateau in the middle of winter? Or a large city wedding in a ballroom filled with family and friends? Start to narrow down months and regions so that you can start scouting venues in that area. As a wedding planner, I can help you find the best location to fit your vision and budget!

5. Talk Budget
Of course, every aspect of your wedding will be dependent on your budget. Before you can start booking vendors, you need to discuss the budget with your spouse and any family members who will be contributing. Determine what you are comfortable with spending and what items you want to prioritize.
For example, you may have a large budget but want it to be an intimate affair, and focus your budget on food, beverage, and lodging for guests.
